It is one of the most beloved and widespread herbs of the Greek countryside, consumed for centuries. His first culture is located on the mountain of the same name, the mountain "ironite".
Dioskourides mentions mountain tea as "ironite", as his contemporaries believed that the plant was effective against wounds caused by iron objects, during the innumerable battles of antiquity.
For others, the name characterized the shoots of the plant. The shoots had sepals that visually resembled the iron tip of a spear. Some speculate that the name comes simply from the herb's iron content.
